Their collaboration marked the first time an American winemaker would create wine using premium French grapes and techniques. The partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild began when both men saw a mutual vision for producing quality Bordeaux style wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other fine grape varieties that could be cultivated successfully in California’s climate. It was founded in 1980 with the aim to produce excellent wines from premium grapes grown on their own estate-owned vineyard which currently covers.
